Balud sa Kapalaran, Hunong Na:
A Call for Peace Amidst Turmoil

The Lord is Risen!
As we celebrate Easter Sunday today, the phrase “Balud sa Kapalaran, Hunong Na” resonates deeply, echoing the sentiments of a nation grappling with the challenges of fate. This Cebuano expression, translating to “Waves of Fate” or “Tides of Destiny,” captures the essence of our collective struggle against the unpredictable tides of life.
Growing up, I was surrounded by the notion that speaking English was synonymous with sophistication. We were even fined 5 centavos for every lapse into our native tongue. But Cory Aquino, our first female president, proved that embracing our dialect is a reflection of our identity. A product of Assumption education and a graduate from the United States, she effortlessly spoke fluent Tagalog and French, showcasing her linguistic prowess.
Cory Aquino’s presidency was marked by bravery and resilience, as she faced the trials of our nation head-on. She stood tall against the “Balud sa Kapalaran,” refusing to succumb to the pressures of fate. Today, we face a new challenge – the oil crisis triggered by the war in the Middle East. The Philippines is heavily reliant on imported oil, with much of its oil coming from the Middle East, making it vulnerable to global supply disruptions.

Filipinos are waiting for their turn to get supply of gas.
The government has declared a state of national energy emergency, with President Bongbong Marcos signing Executive Order No. 110 to address the crisis. The country has around 45 days’ worth of fuel based on current consumption, prompting efforts to build buffer stocks of up to one million barrels. The oil crisis has led to soaring fuel prices.

The world is witnessing the fury of war among nations.
As we struggle to make ends meet, it’s imperative that we put aside our differences and focus on the greater good. Several places have declared a state of calamity,.
As we celebrate Easter, let us pray for peace and an end to the turmoil that besets our world. Let us echo the words of retired Judge Susing Arcamo: “Let us pray for peace.” Let us strive to be the “Pair of Hands” that “Heals our Land.”
Happy Easter!
